Published on July 30, 2015, an extraordinary video of 1,000 musicians performing together quickly became a worldwide internet sensation. The ambitious, crowdfunded project combined musical passion with remarkable organisation to deliver a message the Foo Fighters could hardly ignore. Within days, the clip had attracted millions of views and secured its place in viral-video history. Today, it has been watched more than 67 million times, demonstrating what determined music fans can achieve by joining forces behind one audacious idea.
The project was conceived by Fabio Zaffagnini, an Italian marine geologist and devoted Foo Fighters fan who wanted the band to perform in his adopted hometown of Cesena. Bringing the idea to life required approximately a year of planning and more than €44,000 in crowdfunding. On July 26, 2015, musicians recruited from across Italy gathered at Cesena’s Parco Ippodromo to form the original Rockin’1000. Conducted by Marco Sabiu, the ensemble comprised 350 guitarists, 250 singers, 250 drummers and 150 bassists, all preparing to perform the same song simultaneously.
The resulting video shows the enormous ensemble delivering an impressively coordinated rendition of the Foo Fighters’ 1999 hit “Learn to Fly.” The rows of drummers striking their kits together proved especially memorable. One viewer joked, “After 23 years of having difficulty finding a drummer, I finally find out where all those bastards are.” For the musicians themselves, the experience was equally powerful. One participant later commented, “I was one of the many drummers, and it was an amazing, chilling, human experience.”
More than a decade later, the performance continues to inspire viewers with its tremendous sense of community and shared purpose. One commenter captured its lasting appeal by writing, “I still come back to this from time to time to remind myself that the world is still worth saving.” Since the death of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022, the sight of so many drummers playing together has taken on additional meaning for some fans. “There is just something special watching a row of drummers in unison,” another viewer wrote. “Everyone did an amazing job. R.I.P. Taylor Hawkins.” Most importantly, the musicians’ spectacular invitation achieved precisely what Zaffagnini had hoped.
On July 31, just one day after the video was uploaded, Dave Grohl responded in Italian and promised that the Foo Fighters would come to Cesena. They fulfilled that promise on November 3, 2015, performing a 27-song concert for approximately 3,000 people at the city’s Carisport arena. The band opened with “Learn to Fly,” while Grohl dedicated “My Hero” to Zaffagnini. During “Under Pressure,” Zaffagnini crowd-surfed to the stage, followed by the distinctive mohawked drummer from the viral video, who played drums as Taylor Hawkins stepped forward to sing.
