Melissa Villaseñor Stunned America’s Got Talent Judges With a Hilarious Series of Celebrity Impressions

Melissa Villaseñor walked onto the America’s Got Talent stage with an unassuming introduction and an ordinary day job. But once she began her audition, it quickly became clear that the retail worker had a remarkable talent hiding beneath the surface.

Her ability to recreate the voices and mannerisms of famous personalities left the audience astonished, earning her a standing ovation and turning her Season 6 audition into a memorable moment for viewers.

What made the performance even more impressive was that Villaseñor was not simply a gifted impressionist. She also had a dream of becoming a professional comedian—and she was determined to make it happen.

When Villaseñor first appeared before the judges, nobody quite knew what to expect.

After introducing herself, she answered a few questions about her everyday life. Sharon Osbourne asked what she did for a living, prompting Villaseñor to explain: “Well, I work at a retail store.”

She then revealed what she really hoped to do with her future.

“I want to be a comedian, an impressionist,” she told the judges.

It was a simple statement, but what followed would show just how much potential she had.

Once the applause faded, Villaseñor launched into her routine, and the audience quickly began recognising the familiar voices.

Her first impression was Barbara Walters, followed by Natalie Portman, Miley Cyrus and Kathy Griffin. Each new character brought another wave of laughter and excitement from the crowd.

Villaseñor demonstrated an impressive ability to capture not only the voices but also the distinctive personalities and mannerisms of the celebrities she was imitating.

Then came an unexpected finale.

She launched into an impression of Christina Aguilera singing the American national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner”. The performance revealed another side of her talent: Villaseñor could sing as well as imitate other performers.

By the time she finished, the entire audience was on its feet, giving her a standing ovation.

An AGT Setback Did Not End Her Comedy Ambitions

Despite making a strong impression on the show, Villaseñor’s America’s Got Talent journey came to an end when she was eliminated in the fourth week.

For many performers, such an early setback could have been discouraging. Villaseñor, however, continued pursuing the ambition that had brought her to the stage in the first place.

She eventually secured an opportunity to audition in front of Lorne Michaels for Saturday Night Live. Although she was not hired at that time, the experience became an important chapter in her journey.

Rather than allowing the rejection to define her, she reflected on the opportunity in a thoughtful Facebook post, explaining how much the show meant to her.

A Rejection From Saturday Night Live Became Part of Her Journey

Villaseñor later shared that Saturday Night Live had been one of the main reasons she started pursuing comedy at just 15 years old.

In her post, she wrote:

“SNL is one of the main reasons why I started comedy at 15 and I pray to be there someday when I am ready and have even more to offer. I am very thankful for that experience and will always keep working at new impressions as well as my stand-up comedy.”

Her words showed that, despite not getting the job immediately, she remained grateful for the chance to audition and determined to keep improving.

She continued developing her impressions and stand-up comedy, holding on to the dream that had inspired her as a teenager.

Seven Years Later, Her Dream Finally Came True

Villaseñor’s persistence eventually paid off. Seven years after her earlier audition experience, she joined the Saturday Night Live cast in 2016.

The opportunity represented the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition, and she was understandably overwhelmed by the news.

She shared her excitement on Twitter on September 14, 2016, writing:

“Everybody!! Oh boy!! I cried and am so, so grateful. Will do my best to bring tons of giggles and joy! Love you❤️”

The emotional message reflected just how much the opportunity meant to her after years of working towards it.

Viewers Were Already Calling for Her to Get More Screen Time

Even after Villaseñor joined Saturday Night Live, some viewers felt that her talent deserved greater recognition.

In May 2017, Jeff Peck publicly praised her abilities and urged the programme to make better use of her, writing:

“Dear @melissavcomedy, I really hope that they start using you more on @nbcsnl. You are a huge talent and they are missing the boat with you!”

Another viewer, Ryan Sutton, made a similar appeal in June:

“dear lorne michaels: kindly make melissa villaseñor a permanent cast member on SNL. thank you!”

Their comments reflected the enthusiasm of fans who had recognised her talent and wanted to see more of her work.

Looking back at her early America’s Got Talent audition, it is easy to understand why audiences were impressed. What began as a young retail worker’s attempt to pursue her comedy dream became part of a much longer journey towards one of the most recognisable stages in American television comedy.

Villaseñor’s story is a reminder that an early rejection does not have to be the end of the road. Sometimes, the dream simply takes longer to arrive—and the determination to keep working can make all the difference.
