A 61-year-old man has been charged with mrder following the dath of a housing association worker whose car crashed into a wall in South Wales, after police discovered she had suffered injuries that were not caused by the collision.

Eleanor Barnfield, 47, died in hospital after her vehicle struck a wall on Coity Road in Bridgend on Monday afternoon.

What initially appeared to be a serious road traffic incident became the subject of a major criminal investigation when officers discovered that Eleanor had sustained puncture wounds unrelated to the crash.

South Wales Police have now confirmed that Clifford Foster, 61, from Bridgend, has been charged with her m*rder.

He is due to appear before Newport Magistrates’ Court on Friday, October 23.

Emergency services were called to Coity Road following reports that a car had collided with a wall.

When officers arrived, they discovered that the driver had injuries that could not be explained by the impact.

Eleanor was taken to hospital, where she later died despite medical attention.

Police subsequently confirmed that she had suffered puncture wounds before or separately from the collision, prompting detectives to investigate the circumstances surrounding her d*ath.

The discovery shifted attention away from the crash itself and towards what might have happened beforehand.

Authorities have not publicly detailed the precise sequence of events leading to the collision.

The investigation led officers to the Ger-y-Nant housing complex in Bridgend, a property managed by the Valleys to Coast housing association.

Eleanor worked for the organisation, which provides housing services to communities across the region.

A significant police operation was carried out in the area as detectives pursued their enquiries.

Following the investigation, Clifford Foster was charged with m*rder.

South Wales Police have emphasised that the case is not being treated as a domestic incident.

Senior Investigating Officer Claire Lamerton said her thoughts remained with Eleanor’s loved ones and confirmed that specialist officers were continuing to support the family.

She also urged members of the public not to speculate about the circumstances, particularly now that criminal proceedings are underway.

The charge represents a major development in the investigation, although the full circumstances remain subject to the legal process.

Eleanor’s family have described their overwhelming grief following the loss of a woman they remembered for her kindness, courage and devotion to those closest to her.

In a tribute released through police, they spoke of the enormous place she held within their family.

They remembered her as a loving mother and a source of strength whose absence would be felt by relatives and friends alike.

Their words reflected the shock of losing someone who had been such an important part of their everyday lives.

The family are continuing to receive support from specialist officers while the case progresses.

Housing Association Mourns Valued Colleague

Eleanor’s employer, Valleys to Coast, has also expressed deep sadness over her passing.

Chief executive Jo Oak described Eleanor as a highly valued member of staff who had made a meaningful contribution to both the organisation and the communities it serves.

Her colleagues remembered her with affection and said her loss had affected people throughout the housing association.

The organisation confirmed that it was providing support to those impacted by the tragedy.

It also pledged to continue cooperating fully with South Wales Police.

Out of consideration for Eleanor’s family and the ongoing legal proceedings, the housing association said it would not comment further on the circumstances surrounding her d*ath.

Court Appearance Scheduled as Case Continues

Clifford Foster is expected to appear at Newport Magistrates’ Court on Friday, October 23, following the m*rder charge.

Investigators have not publicly established how Eleanor sustained her injuries or what happened immediately before her vehicle crashed.

Those questions are now central to the criminal proceedings.

For Eleanor’s family, friends and colleagues, the tragedy has left an immense sense of loss.

What began with reports of a car striking a wall has developed into a m*rder case, with the discovery of injuries unrelated to the collision forming a crucial part of the investigation.
