Ukrainian Mother and Daughter Leave Canada’s Got Talent Judges in Tears With Powerful Sand Art Performance

A Ukrainian mother and daughter who fled their war-torn homeland delivered one of the most emotional auditions on Canada’s Got Talent in 2024, telling their story through sand art before receiving an unexpected Golden Buzzer.
Mariya and her daughter Nikol, performing under the name Together For Peace, appeared before judges Howie Mandel, Lilly Singh, Kardinal Offishall and Trish Stratus with a performance unlike the usual singing and dancing acts.
Having left Ukraine for Quebec, Canada, the pair hoped to use their artistic talents to communicate a message of hope, resilience and peace.
Although they spoke little English, their performance would demonstrate that some stories need no words at all.
A Heartbreaking Answer Before the Performance

Before beginning their audition, Mariya and Nikol were joined by a Ukrainian-English interpreter who helped them communicate with the judges.
The conversation initially included a lighthearted moment when the interpreter accidentally repeated a question in English instead of translating it into Ukrainian.
However, the atmosphere soon changed as the mother and daughter explained why they had left their homeland.
They had initially tried to remain in Ukraine and continue their everyday lives despite the ongoing conflict.
Eventually, they realised they could make a greater contribution through their artistic abilities than by remaining in increasingly dangerous circumstances.
When asked what they had left behind, Mariya gave a devastatingly simple answer.
“Everything.”
The single word captured the enormous personal loss behind their journey and provided a powerful introduction to the performance that followed.
A Story of War and Hope Told Entirely Through Sand

Rather than performing a song or delivering a spoken monologue, Mariya and Nikol used moving sand art to recreate their experiences.
Working with carefully controlled movements, they transformed images across an illuminated surface, allowing one scene to disappear as another emerged.
The performance began with peaceful imagery of Ukraine, including a mother holding her baby.
That tranquillity was suddenly interrupted by images representing gunfire, destruction and the outbreak of war.
As the sand shifted, familiar scenes of family life gave way to chaos and uncertainty.
The changing pictures illustrated how quickly an ordinary existence could be overturned by conflict.
Yet the performance did not end with destruction.
From the darkness emerged a bird symbolising peace, followed by an image of the world held between two hands.
The final message, Ensemble pour la paix, translated as Together For Peace, reflected the duo’s artistic identity and their hopes for the future.
Their storytelling required no dialogue, allowing the audience to understand the emotional journey through images alone.
An Unexpected Golden Buzzer Changes Everything
The performance made a powerful impression on the judging panel.
Trish Stratus praised the mother and daughter for finding a beautiful and distinctive way to communicate their message, thanking them for sharing their experiences.
The other judges also responded warmly to the emotional presentation.
However, the biggest surprise came after their feedback.
Country singer and Canada’s Got Talent host Lindsay Ell, who had been watching from the side of the stage, approached the judges’ desk.
Visibly emotional, Ell spoke about the distress and hatred affecting the world and how inspiring it was to witness a mother and daughter drawing strength from one another.
She then pressed the Golden Buzzer, sending Mariya and Nikol directly through to the live semi-finals.
The moment transformed an already moving audition into a celebration of the pair’s resilience and artistic achievement.
For the performers, the recognition carried significance beyond the competition itself.
Their personal experiences had reached an audience through a form of storytelling that crossed language barriers.
A $25,000 Prize and a Chance at the Million-Dollar Final
During the 2024 season, Canada’s Got Talent offered Golden Buzzer recipients a $25,000 award, together with advancement to the semi-finals.
The competition also featured a $1 million grand prize.
For Together For Peace, the Golden Buzzer therefore represented both financial recognition and an opportunity to continue sharing their message on a larger stage.
Their audition also attracted attention online, with the performance receiving hundreds of thousands of YouTube views.
But the emotional impact of the act extended beyond competition results and viewing figures.
The duo had transformed a deeply personal experience into a visual narrative about loss, displacement and the hope of rebuilding a life.
A Performance That Needed No Translation

Talent competitions often celebrate extraordinary voices, spectacular stunts and surprising technical abilities.
Together For Peace offered something different.
Their strength lay in the ability to communicate a complex emotional story without relying on spoken language.
From the peaceful image of a mother and child to the destruction of their homeland and the eventual emergence of a symbol of peace, each transformation carried part of their journey.
The performance also highlighted the bond between Mariya and Nikol, whose shared artistic work became a means of expressing experiences that were difficult to put into words.
Their 2024 audition remains a memorable example of how a talent-show stage can become a platform for personal storytelling.
For one Ukrainian mother and daughter, a handful of sand was enough to tell the world what they had lost, what they had survived and why they still believed in peace.
