‘Sicario 3’ Still in Active Discussions, Producer Thad Luckinbill Confirms
A third installment in the critically acclaimed Sicario saga remains in active discussions, with producer and Special Ops: Lioness star Thad Luckinbill confirming ongoing efforts to bring the gritty franchise back to theaters.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, Luckinbill—who produced both the 2015 original and its 2018 sequel Sicario: Day of the Soldado—expressed strong optimism about expanding the cinematic universe penned by Taylor Sheridan.
A Long-Awaited Return for the Core Trio
Following recent assertions from star Josh Brolin that a threequel is “happening soon,” Luckinbill shared that conversations around the project remain very much alive:
-
Passion for the Story: “We’re hoping to do it, so fingers crossed,” Luckinbill said. “It would be great to get to do another one for the fans. And, honestly, for me, too… Even though I produced it, I wanna see it.”
-
Sheridan’s Packed Schedule: Working closely with Sheridan on the Paramount+ espionage series Lioness, Luckinbill acknowledged that aligning the prolific showrunner’s massive television commitments remains the chief logistical challenge: “It’s hard; he’s so busy. But the world he created is there, so let’s hope.”

Building on a Landmark Crime Franchise
Originally serving as Sheridan’s feature screenwriting debut under the direction of Denis Villeneuve, the 2015 Oscar-nominated Sicario earned critical acclaim through the tense dynamic between Emily Blunt’s FBI agent Kate Macer, Josh Brolin’s CIA operative Matt Graver, and Benicio del Toro’s lethal assassin Alejandro Gillick.

While 2018’s Day of the Soldado director Stefano Sollima previously noted that any subsequent chapter should feature a new director with a distinct visual signature, the creative team’s continued interest suggests the cartel thriller remains primed for another hard-hitting entry.
