Barry Gibb and Niece Samantha Honor Maurice Gibb With Heartfelt Duet

The Gibb family’s musical legacy extends beyond the three brothers who formed the Bee Gees. That became unmistakably clear when Samantha Gibb joined her uncle Barry for a deeply moving performance of “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?”

Samantha, the daughter of late Bee Gees bassist Maurice Gibb, was 34 when she appeared with Barry at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on May 19, 2014.

Their duet celebrated one of the group’s most enduring songs while quietly paying tribute to the father and brother they had lost.

A song that held special meaning for Maurice

Before the music began, Barry and Samantha embraced onstage. Barry explained that they had chosen a song they both loved—and one that had also been among Maurice’s favourites.

Samantha opened the performance with “The End of the World,” the hit associated with Skeeter Davis. Its lyrics about the pain of missing a loved one immediately gave the performance a reflective and emotional tone.

Rather than imitate the original country-pop recording, Samantha reshaped the song with a soulful R&B influence. Her delivery demonstrated the musical ability she inherited from her father while also revealing a style entirely her own.

Two songs joined into one emotional tribute

Barry entered after Samantha’s opening verse and smoothly guided the performance into “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?”

The transition worked naturally because both songs explore loss, grief and the difficulty of moving forward after heartbreak.

Samantha handled the second verse of the Bee Gees classic, once again adding her own soulful interpretation. When she and Barry finally joined their voices for the chorus, the duet became a touching celebration of Maurice’s memory.

Maurice died suddenly on January 12, 2003, aged 53. He suffered cardiac arrest following surgery for a twisted intestine.

The emotional context made the Philadelphia performance feel like more than a family collaboration. Both Barry and Samantha appeared to be carrying Maurice’s memory with them throughout the song.

A reminder of the three brothers together

The duet also recalled an earlier performance featuring Barry, Robin and Maurice together.

On April 17, 2001, all three Bee Gees performed “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” at the Manhattan Center. The footage preserved the brothers singing one of their most important ballads less than two years before Maurice’s death.

Samantha Gibb builds her own musical career

Samantha is based in Nashville and has established a career as a singer and songwriter.

She began collaborating with songwriter Lazaro Rodriguez in 2004. Since then, she has released original music while also writing material for other performers.

Her appearance with Barry demonstrated both her connection to the Gibb family legacy and her ability to bring a personal musical identity to a familiar song.

The history of a Bee Gees landmark

“How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” occupies an important place in the Bee Gees’ catalogue because it became the group’s first number-one single in the United States.

The ballad was released as the lead single from the band’s 1971 studio album Trafalgar and was eventually certified Gold in the US.

Written in August 1970, the song was initially credited to Barry and Robin Gibb. Maurice later received a songwriting credit when the track appeared on the 2009 compilation Ultimate Bee Gees.
