Furlong, who will turn 49 on Sunday, had no acting credits when he was cast as the wayward teenager John Connor in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
The role in the James Cameron project was an opportunity for the budding star to establish himself as one of Hollywood’s most promising young actors.
Instead, his career plummeted after he appeared in 1998’s hard-hitting drama American History X.
He began struggling with addiction, and checked into rehab for the first time in 2000.
On Friday he was spotted out with a friend in Los Angeles, stopping by a grocery store before tucking into tacos from a street vendor.
The Daily Mail has reached out to Furlong for comment but has yet to hear back.

During the outing he was clad in a short-sleeved, crew neck black T-shirt, aviator sunglasses, and textured brown pants.
Furlong was supposed to fly to Australia for an appearance at the Melbourne Metro Comic Con, scheduled for July 18-19.
He was slated to be joined by fellow Terminator veteran Linda Hamilton, 69, at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre.
Ahead of the event, planners teased that fans would get the chance to take photos with and receive autographs from the California-born actor.
But one day before the convention was set to take place, the official Melbourne Metro Comic Con Instagram announced that Furlong’s appearance would not be happening.
A caption alerted attendees: ‘It is with great regret that we announce that due to unforeseen circumstances, Edward Furlong was unable to make his flight to Australia this weekend, and as such will not be able to attend Metro Comic Con.
‘We have been working together to see if there was an alternative flight option, but unfortunately nothing available would get him to Melbourne in time for the event.’
It was noted, ‘Edward is extremely disappointed, as he was incredibly excited to finally travel out and meet his Australian fans, but he has assured us that [he] will be coming over to see you all in the near future.’

Furlong appears to have gotten his life back on track after some challenging years.
After his first rehab stint, the actor struggled through years of relapses that led to several confrontations with the law.
Prolonged crystal meth use rotted his teeth, and striking images sparked concern as the former child star’s descent was made public.
But following decades of struggle, the actor has made improvements, revealing to Daily Mail in 2024 that he had re-launched his career as he celebrated his ‘second chance.’
He appeared in The Forest Hills and Unspeakable: Beyond the Wall of Sleep two years ago, sharing at the time, ‘It feels great to be back on set and sober too.’
‘I didn’t feel hungover when I went to work. There’s other sober people at work which is weird because if you’re not sober, you’re not hanging out with the other sober people. It was cool,’ he added.
Furlong admitted that it took him time to agree to have his teeth replaced with veneers in 2022.
