BBC to air one of Eric Dane’s last ever roles six months after his death

The BBC is set to air one of Eric Dane’s final ever roles.
The Grey’s Anatomy actor died aged 53 in February 2026, less than a year after revealing he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
The actor, also known for his role in Euphoria, shared his diagnosis in April 2025 and spent the following months raising awareness for the form of motor neurone disease.
“I’m trying to save my life,” he said, weeks before his death, after being named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in health for his campaigning.
“If my actions can move the needle forward for myself and countless others, I’m satisfied.”

Eric, who first made his TV debut in 1993 in Wonder Years before featuring in Charmed, Marley and Me, Valentine’s Day and The Last Ship, will now be returning to BBC screens.
The broadcaster has acquired Kabul, a six-part fictional drama set amongst the backdrop of real-life events.
Set in August 2021 in Afghanistan, it follows the withdrawal of American troops and the Taliban taking over the city.
The synopsis teases: “The Nazany family, like many civilians, is forced to flee, fearing retaliation.
“In this desperate and chaotic situation – shadowed by the looming threat of an attack by ISIS – French police officers, Italian diplomats, German military personnel, and American intelligence services must somehow coordinate to manage the influx of civilians.
“How will each of them manage to save their own lives? The countdown has begun.”

Alongside Eric, the cast includes Darina Al Joundi, Shervin Alenabi, Vassilis Koukalani, Hannah Abdoh, Jonathan Zaccaï, Gianmarco Saurino, and Jeanne Goursaud.
Following Eric’s death, several of his former co-stars shared tributes, with Patrick Dempsey, who starred alongside the McSteamy actor in Grey’s Anatomy as Dr Derek Shepherd, describing him as “a joy to work with”.
“He was the funniest man – he was such a joy to work with and I want to just remember him in that spirit because any time he was on set, he brought so much fun to it. He had a great sense of humour,” he said.
Euphoria creator Sam Levinson also told Variety: “I’m heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend.” He added: “Working with him was an honor. Being his friend was a gift.”
Kabul will be available on BBC iPlayer from Sunday, August 2, and begins on BBC Four at 9pm on Saturday, August 15.
