Period drama fans have been urged to binge a “brilliant” series with a major twist.

While Downton Abbey came to an end with a third and final film last year, following the original series finishing in 2015, some fans have rediscovered a parody series, which puts a Kardashian-esque spin on the classic period drama.

Another Period, starring Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome, first aired in 2015, going on to run for three seasons. It followed the lives of the Bellacourts, the first family of Newport, Rhode Island, at the beginning of the 20th century.

The actresses played sisters who only care for how they look, the social life they maintain and finding fame.

And it’s fair to say Another Period has gone down a treat with fans. One viewer wrote: “BRILLIANT. Cutting and ruthless in its commentary on modern society under the guise of America in the early 1900s, show creators and stars Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome pioneered what I think may be the absolute BEST comedy of the last decade you’ve probably never seen.”

Another said: “I find this quirky and odd comedy very refreshing and different from the mainstream. The writing style and humour is superb as it creates a post-modern satire of ‘The Kardashians’ beamed back in time to Another Period!”

“Hilarious Downton Abbey parody,” someone else said. Another added: “Smart, funny, excellent TV show!” while yet another wrote: “Another Period is hilariously crafted by blending reality TV show elements with historical drama parody Downton Abbey. Initially I was sceptical but it turned out to be really good, though some mid episodes were rather campy.”

Someone else said: “What a brilliant surprise! This show came out of nowhere, as far as I could tell, and is absolutely terrific. Great cast, great writing, great timing equals great comedy.”

One fan echoed: “Great show. Wish it kept going.” Viewers were left heartbroken when the series was cancelled, with one saying: “Too bad. This was a great show,” as another echoed: “At least it was still pretty good while it lasted.”

Previously talking about creating the series, director Jeremy Konner told IndieWire: “One thing that was most interesting to me about this time period and Newport, when [producers] first talked to me about it, is the fact that everybody is living like Downton Abbey, but it’s all new money.

“Even the old money is actually only a couple of generations old. That is the oldest the money gets. Everybody is the richest human that has ever lived, but they’ve never lived like this before.

“All of the servants in Downton have been in a serving class for hundreds of years, but in America nobody knows what the hell they’re doing. They don’t know how to be a servant or an under-butler.”

Another Period is available to buy on Amazon Prime Video.
