The parents of the family of eight who were found dead in their Michigan home after a fire have been identified.

Family members confirmed to outlets including WOOD and The Detroit News that Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, 39, and Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, were the two adults killed in the incident that took place on Friday, July 24.

Steve Lawwill, Mandy’s stepfather, identified the pair to The Detroit News, adding that he and his wife were waiting for autopsy results for the rest of the family and a statement from a police captain before sharing any further information.

Deputies from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) and the Grand Haven Fire Department (GHFD) were first called to the couple’s home at around 11:40 a.m. local time on Friday for reports of a house fire.

“When [firefighters] got inside, they noticed that there were several people deceased inside the home,” Capt. Jacob Sparks said at a press conference on Friday, per 13 On Your Side. “Some of the victims did have gunshot wounds to their bodies.”

Eight people, including six children, ranging in age from 5 to 15, were found dead inside the residence, the Associated Press and ABC 7 Chicago reported, citing the OCSO.

“We don’t have a cause of death at this point. We’re looking into that,” Sparks said. “We believe everybody that was involved in the situation is in the residence … It’s a complicated scene, a complex scene.”

He added that the fire was “suspicious,” while noting that police are investigating whether it was “intentionally set.”

Sharing a news article about the incident on Facebook, Mandy’s sister, Molly, confirmed that the victims were Mandy, her husband and their six children.

“Our hearts are utterly shattered. Tragic doesn’t even touch it,” Molly wrote.

In a press release, Grand Haven Area Public Schools — where Mandy worked as a substitute teacher, according to a January social media post from the district — announced that it will offer support to grieving community members in the wake of the tragedy.

“It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge reports of a devastating incident in Grand Haven Township earlier today involving the loss of multiple lives, including several school-aged children,” Superintendent Kristin Perkowski said in the statement. “Regardless of the details that may emerge, this is a devastating incident and a tragic loss for our community. Our hearts are with all those impacted, and we know many throughout our community may be grieving and struggling to process this news.”

“Our Buccaneer family grieves alongside all those impacted by this tremendous loss,” Perkowski continued. “Please continue to care for yourselves and one another as our community processes this news together.”

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for further information.
