Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble stepped onto the stage in Mantova and transformed the beloved classic into a breathtaking showcase of soaring vocals, rich harmonies and raw emotion.

Il Volo Turns “Unchained Melody” Into a Moment of Pure Emotion at Palazzo Te

On May 8, 2025, Il Volo opened the first of three special Italian evenings in Mantova with Tutti per uno – Viaggio nel tempo, bringing Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble to the historic setting of the Esedra of Palazzo Te. The project was conceived as a journey through music, combining the trio’s repertoire with celebrated songs from different eras and special performances with guests.

Among the most memorable moments was a powerful performance of “Unchained Melody,” the timeless song famously associated with Elvis Presley. On this occasion, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble shared the spotlight, bringing their contrasting voices together in a performance that highlighted both the emotional weight of the song and the distinctive character of Il Volo.

A Journey Through Time

The Mantova concerts were part of the third edition of Tutti per uno – Viaggio nel tempo, a project created by Michele Torpedine and organized and produced by Friends & Partners.

The performances were scheduled for May 8, 10 and 11, 2025, marking the trio’s only Italian live dates that May. After completing their Italian arena tour in January, Il Volo returned with a production designed around music, Italian culture and the memories attached to songs from different periods.

Rather than limiting the evenings to their familiar repertoire, the format allowed the singers to move between solo performances, group numbers and collaborations with special guests. The result was a musical journey spanning generations and styles.

And “Unchained Melody” provided one of the evening’s most intimate passages.

The performance gave Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble an opportunity to explore the emotional side of the song without relying on the full trio.

“Unchained Melody” demands restraint as much as vocal power. Its long, expressive phrases leave little room for a singer to hide behind the arrangement, making the connection between the performers and the melody especially important.

Ignazio’s rich, powerful delivery and Gianluca’s warm, expressive voice created a natural contrast. Rather than turning the song into a competition between two voices, the performance allowed each singer to bring his own character to the familiar melody.

That sense of dialogue is part of what makes the performance memorable.

Palazzo Te Provides the Perfect Setting

The historic Palazzo Te added another layer to the production. The Esedra, chosen as the setting for the three Mantova performances, gave the project a distinctive atmosphere and reflected the show’s broader idea of connecting music with Italy’s artistic and cultural heritage.

The first evening also featured an impressive collection of guests and musical collaborations. Reports from the May 8 recording mention Gianni Morandi, Gaia, Gigi D’Alessio, Placido Domingo, Massimo Ranieri, Beppe Fiorello and flautist Andrea Griminelli, among others.

Morandi performed with each member of Il Volo, while Piero Barone joined Placido Domingo for Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers. The evening also included a closing performance of Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma.”

Against that expansive backdrop, the quieter chemistry between Ignazio and Gianluca on “Unchained Melody” offered a different kind of highlight.

More Than a Familiar Classic

For Il Volo, revisiting well-known international songs has long been part of their musical identity. Their ability to move between operatic repertoire, Italian classics and international standards allows the three singers to approach familiar material from a distinctly vocal perspective.

“Unchained Melody” fits naturally into that world.

The song has been recorded by numerous artists over the decades and became particularly associated with Elvis Presley. Giving it to Ignazio and Gianluca in Mantova allowed the performance to focus less on spectacle and more on vocal expression.

It was a reminder that Tutti per uno – Viaggio nel tempo was not simply a showcase for Il Volo’s biggest hits. The concept was built around revisiting music from different eras and allowing the singers to reinterpret songs connected with memories, artists and moments in musical history.

The May 8 performance marked the beginning of three consecutive special evenings at Palazzo Te. With a large orchestra, guest artists and a repertoire stretching across generations, the Mantova project gave Il Volo a setting very different from a conventional arena concert.

For fans, moments such as Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble performing “Unchained Melody” offered something particularly personal: two members of the trio stepping forward and allowing the emotion of a beloved classic to take center stage.

In the middle of an ambitious show built around famous names, historic songs and elaborate collaborations, the performance worked precisely because it felt simple.

Two voices.

One unforgettable melody.

And another memorable chapter in Il Volo’s continuing musical journey.
