Shetland has unveiled a dramatic first-look trailer for its upcoming 11th series, giving fans a glimpse of Alison O’Donnell’s final appearance as Alison “Tosh” McIntosh.
O’Donnell has been a central part of the much-loved crime drama since it began 13 years ago. Earlier this year, she announced that she would be leaving the series, making the new season a particularly emotional one for both the actor and longtime viewers.
And if the newly released trailer is any indication, Tosh’s farewell will be anything but quiet.
The investigation begins with a chilling discovery when a car is pulled from the water and police find decomposed skeletal remains inside its boot.
A Chilling Discovery Sparks a Dangerous Investigation

According to the official synopsis, the disturbing discovery leads Calder and Tosh into a case with deep roots in the past.
The remains belong to an unidentified man, and the team’s search for answers begins with an attempt to trace the owner of the vehicle. Their investigation leads them to a respected local GP who left the islands nine years earlier amid troubling rumours.
As Calder and Tosh dig deeper into the doctor’s state of mind and the lives of those he left behind, they find themselves drawn into increasingly dark and dangerous territory.
What initially appears to be a mystery surrounding an unidentified victim soon develops into a historic murder case with consequences that will continue to affect the people connected to it in the present day.
Alison O’Donnell Promises a Memorable Exit
O’Donnell has hinted that her final season demanded more from her than ever before.
Speaking about the new episodes, she said they included some of the most challenging scenes she had filmed during her time on Shetland.
Without revealing too much about Tosh’s storyline, the actor teased the creation of special sets, the involvement of a stunt artist and a journey that required some particularly deep emotional work.
But alongside the dramatic moments, the season also features quieter and more reflective scenes involving the people who matter most to Tosh.
O’Donnell believes the combination will make for a farewell that audiences will remember.
An Emotional Goodbye After 13 Years
Leaving Shetland was never going to be easy for O’Donnell, who has built close relationships with many of her fellow cast members over more than a decade on the show.
She previously described her longtime colleagues Steven Robertson, Lewis Howden and Anne Kidd as being like family.
Filming her final scenes proved to be especially emotional, giving the actors an opportunity to share meaningful conversations and reflect on the years they had spent working together.
For O’Donnell, those moments became some of the most special memories of her time on the series.
After 13 years as Tosh, her final chapter promises to combine the gripping mystery that has made Shetland such a popular crime drama with a deeply personal farewell for one of its most familiar faces.
Shetland series 11 premieres on November 12 at 9pm on BBC One.
