Nicola Walker’s Disney+ Comedy-Drama Returning for Season Two

Nicola Walker and Jemaine Clement are set to return for another chapter of Alice and Steve, the dark Disney+ comedy-drama built around a decades-long friendship that descends into bitter conflict.

Created and written by Sophie Goodhart, the series follows longtime friends Alice and Steve, whose 30-year bond is thrown into chaos after Steve begins dating Alice’s 26-year-old daughter, Izzy.

Teasing what lies ahead, Goodhart offered an ominous warning: “No one will be prepared for what happens next.”

What Could Happen in Season Two?

The first season saw Alice devastated by Steve’s relationship with Izzy. Terrified of losing both her daughter and her closest friend, she did everything she could to separate them.

Steve, however, anticipated her attempts to interfere. Their increasingly hostile battle ultimately led to a major cliffhanger, leaving the future of Alice and Steve’s relationship unresolved.

Specific details about the second season remain closely guarded. Lee Mason, VP, Scripted, Disney+ EMEA, has nevertheless promised that the new episodes will deliver more “laughs, betrayal, and bad decisions.”

Who Is Expected to Return?

The official cast for season two has not yet been confirmed, although Nicola Walker and Jemaine Clement are expected to reprise their roles as Alice and Steve.

Joel Fry, known for Cruella, could also return as Alice’s husband, Daniel, alongside The Tattooist of Auschwitz actress Yali Topol Margalith as Izzy.

Walker previously explained that the opportunity to portray someone unlike the women she had played before was a major reason she accepted the role.

“I love all of the women I’ve played,” she said. “Then when Alice came through, I thought, well, I haven’t really played someone like her. That was the main draw. And the writing is so incredibly good. It was a bit of a no-brainer actually.”

Viewers and Critics Were Divided

Alice and Steve received an enthusiastic response from many viewers, who described the series as “phenomenal” and a “brilliant” dark comedy. Critical reaction, however, was more mixed.

The Guardian awarded the show two stars, calling it an “icky comedy” that felt “dated and wrong.” The Telegraph also gave it two stars and argued that “the heart of the show is just too icky to ignore.”

RadioTimes.com offered a more positive assessment, describing the series as “poignant and funny” in a four-star review. HELLO! also praised Walker’s “brilliant” performance and called the comedy “binge-worthy.”

The first season of Alice and Steve is available to stream on Disney+. A release date for season two has not yet been announced.
